Heritage

The historical evolution of Benicasim has endowed with an ample artistic patrimony that can be enjoyed throughout the year. Do not forget to walk the route of the villas that is located on the promenade and take us to the Belle Époque Benicense. It transports you to the heyday of the noble tourism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when a select group of Castilian and Valencian families built in this bay what is known as the “Biarritz Valenciano”, a group of large villas diversity and architectural richness. Divided into two itineraries, according to the predominant artistic current at the time of construction and the character of the original residents. On the one hand, the route of the “Hell” owes its name to the scandalous celebrations that were celebrated in the villages of that area, while the route of the “Celestial Court” is distinguished by the tranquility of its streets. Both areas are separated by the gardens of Comín, popularly known as “El Limbo”. 51 villas are cataloged, of which 19 are signposted. In addition, four constructions have a level of integral protection.

Enter the city and you will find the Parish Church Santo Tomás de Villanueva, or the Cine-Theater that throughout the year offers a varied program of theater, music, workshops and exhibitions.

The Torre Sant Vicent was one of the eighteen watchtowers that belongs to what today is the province of Castellón, along the coast, and whose mission was to monitor and defend its coasts from the attacks of corsairs. Dating from the 16th century, it is surrounded by a beautiful garden, situated right next to the sea with a large leisure area.

Get lost in the Las Palmas Desert Nature Park and soak up its history at the Interpretation Center. In this mountain range you can distinguish several moutain ranges and peaks: the Sierra del Desierto, the Sierra de Les Santes and Les Agulles de Santa Àgueda.

Desierto Palmas Benicàssim

Monastery of the Carmelites: in the 17th century the Carmelites arrived in the mountains of the Desert of Palmas where they built a monastery. Among them was Fray Antonio de Jesús María, who was an outstanding scholar and connoisseur of the aromatic herbs. When it became a Novitiate House, the novices’ needs, their studies and training had to be taken care of, and for this reason they thought of commercializing an aromatic drink, extracted from the mutiple native grasses growing in the Palmas Desert. In the basement of the Monastery, some stills were installed and the first bottles of Carmelite Liquor were marketed. Given the poor communication, the distilleries were moved to the town of Benicasim and in 1912 the current wineries and distilleries were founded and, in addition to the elaboration of the exquisite Liquor, the range of products has been expanded, combining old guidelines and artisan recipes with the latest modern techniques. Recently the distillate line of Carmelitano, has received the stamp of Castellón Ruta de Sabor, an initiative that promotes the best products of the province.

Popular Festivals

And if the tangible historical patrimony is important, popular festivals are too: from the patron saints in honor of San Antonio and Santa Águeda in January, the pilgrimage to the patron saint in February, to those of Saint Thomas of Villanueva in September, passing by the magical night of San Juan on June 23, there are truly a lot of festivals
